Congrats to @aps_sport & Brighton Grammar Alumni Ben Hance (OB2018) on winning the GOLD medal & becoming the first EVER to go back-to-back in the men’s 100m backstroke S14. He also clocked a new world record in the heats! Ben paid tribute to his late father - who died earlier this year - after claiming gold in the 100m backstroke S14 event at the Paralympics. Ben comfortably won the final just hours after setting a world record in his heat (56.52 seconds). When Ben touched the wall first in the final, his attention immediately switched to his late father, pointing to the sky and uttering the words: "I love you, Dad." The impressive swim meant Ben - who has an intellectual impairment - became the first man to win consecutive gold medals at the Paralympics. Congrats to our @aps_sport current athletes and Alumni who participated in the recent World Under 20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru from 20-31 August 2024! We had 6 #APS Athletes selected to represent @athleticsaustralia at the World Championships with some incredible results!! 👏👏👏 Well done to: Sophia Gregorevic (OW2023) @wesleycollege_melbourne & team mates on winning the Gold Medal in the Mixed 4x400m Relay in a time of 3:19.27 and Silver in the Women’s 4x400m in a time of 3:19.27 The Mixed 4x400m Relay quartet shattered the Australian U20 record twice in the one day, clocking the third fastest time in history in 3:19.27 to be crowned World Champions! They secured Australia's first medal of the World Athletics U20 Champs! Caleb Kilpatrick, Yr 11 @geelong_college & team mates who won Bronze medal in the Men’s 4x400m Relay in a time of 3:05.53. Muia Scerri (OH2023) @haileyburyschool who came 4th in the Heptathlon with a Personal Best score of 5,550 points. Marcus Wakim @careygrammar came 13th in the Men’s 10Km Walk event. Congrats to @aps_sport Rep and @careygrammar Alumni & current @geelongcats footballer Ollie Dempsey (OCG2021) on winning the @afl Rising Star Award for 2024! Ollie has become just the second Geelong player to win the Rising Star Award as the best young player in the AFL this year. Ollie was the red-hot favourite for the award and picked up 52 of a possible 55 votes. He won ahead of @stkevinscollege alumni & North Melbourne's George Wardlaw (SKCOC2022), who was close behind in second with 43 votes. In his acceptance speech, the 21-year-old made note of the bans handed to Darcy and Reid that helped pave the way for him to win the award. First drafted as a rookie in 2021, Ollie was still eligible for the award having played just seven games in his first two seasons at the Cats. To be eligible, a player must be under 21 years old and have played less than 10 AFL games at the start of the year. Dempsey has become a mainstay of Chris Scott's side this year, playing all 23 matches and averaging 18 disposals and a goal a game. He was selected with pick 13 in the 2022 Rookie Draft from Old Carey after playing community footy with Boroondara Hawks and juniors with the Hawthorn Citizens. The 187cm forward kicked 21 goals and averaged almost 18 disposals from his 23 games this season. He registered more than 20 disposals in nine games and had an impressive 23 goal assists and 125 score involvements across the season. Ollie was awarded the Round 1 AFL Rising Star nomination this year after kicking three goals and 15 disposals against St Kilda. Overall there were 5 former #APS Footballers nominated for this years award including: George Wardlaw, @stkevinscollege, Sam Darcy @scotchcollegemelbourne, Harvey Thomas @caulfieldgs & Nick Watson @caulfieldgs.
