Congrats to @wesley_college_melbourne Yr 11 student Kulang Kulang on his recent selection to play for the 2021 @afl World Team!

The World Team is an elite AFL Development Pathway program and is comprised of the top 25 multicultural football players from across Australia.

Kulang says, 'It’s truly an honour to be recognised as one of the best multicultural players around the country. Having players like @aps_sport Rep & @xaviercollege alumni CJ (Changkuoth Jiath), Aliir Aliir and many more go through the same program is just amazing!

Being a young Sudanese player, I really admire these AFL players and will be forever grateful for this opportunity'.

As mentioned, the World Team Program is an elite AFL development pathway program designed to give the participants a unique opportunity to develop their football skills and be exposed to a leadership and cultural program to encourage their personal development.

Since commencing back in 2011 the program has grown and developed into a well known and respected talent pathway that many young Multicultural boys strive to be part of.

The program is based on the following pillars:

• Cultural Identity
• Decision Making
• Resilience
• Communication

Vale Vic McFarlane.

@haileyburyschool & @APS_sport mourn the passing of highly regarded Athletics/High Jump coach of eight years, Vic McFarlane who recently passed away peacefully.

Vic coached and guided many Haileybury high jumpers to be their best. Often seen in the background providing his knowledge and advice.

He will fondly be remembered for his commitment and support of his athletes as well as being the elder statesmen of the Haileybury coaching team.

Vic first joined the Sandringham Athletics Club in the early 1950’s as a middle distance runner, also testing out the walk for a time. He transitioned to coaching in the early 60’s and in the late 70’s became the club high jump coach, a position he held for over 40 years. Vic received his life membership to the Sandringham Athletic Club in 1975. For many years Vic has been the first to arrive to training every night. He would open the gates and clubrooms for athletes and wait for his high jumpers to warm up, greeting everyone with a smile and a chuckle.

Vic coached numerous athletes that went on to compete at Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games. Notably Jane Fleming and Caroline Lewis, and more recently #APS Athletics record holders Henry Smith @st_kevins (pic #4) and Mia Scerri @haileyburyschool (pic #3) both pictured on the cover photo with Vic.

His passion for coaching also saw him helping little athletics groups and numerous schools in Bayside, including the last 8 years at @haileyburyaths.

The APS Sport community extend our deepest symmpathies to Vic’s family and friends.

Rest in Peace Vic.

Jordan talks about his #APS school sport days, Rugby & other experiences!

APS Sport has been the home to present day Olympians, Test Match Cricketers, AFL & AFLW Footballers and multiple other people competing at the pinnacle of their chosen sport.

Before they reached that level though they were just another student on a Saturday morning representing their school and playing with their friends.

The APS Sport Alumni #Reflections Series provides some insights as to where the journey began – at APS Sport.

Over this series we will hear from some of our most recent successful Alumni about their favourite #APS School Sport memories, the people that helped shape their journey and what lessons or tips they have for the present day students.

Jordan Uelese, attended St. Kevin’s College graduating in 2014. Jordan plays for the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby. He has been capped 4 times for the Australian National team.

In his time at SKC where he played number eight he won three School Rugby titles as part of the impressive Rugby program at the school. Jordan also represented the school in the APS Athletics Carnival being part of 2 Premiership winning teams in that discipline. After school he switched to hooker, the position he played for the @melbournerebels U20 side in the National Championships.

Uelese was selected for the Australia U20 team two years, playing at the World Rugby Championships in Manchester in 2016 and in Georgia in 2017. Jordan made his Super Rugby debut in the opening round of the 2017 season against the Blues, becoming the third ‘home-grown’ player for the Rebels. In September 2017 he made his debut for Australia against the Springboks in a 23–23 draw at nib Stadium in Perth.

Receiving peer-based recognition or nomination in any field or discipline is a commendable feat; winning the associated award is a testament to one’s character and skill.

Congrats to @BrightonGrammar student Harrison Chapman and Old Boy Ethan O’Brien for their outstanding Sailing achievements beyond BGS.

Harrison Chapman (Yr. 12 and Captain of Sailing) is the joint-winner of the 2021 Youth Sailor of the Year Award (Victoria). Together with his crewman James Jackson (@peninsulagrammar), Harrison produced excellent results in the 420 class.

Upon the completion of his VCE studies, Harrison plans to continue his enthusiasm in the sport, whether that be at Mornington Yacht Club or a prospective university overseas.

Ethan O’Brien (OBG2018 & BGS Head Coach of Sailing) has won the 2021 Instructor of the Year Award (Victoria). He has been recognised for his comprehensive management of the sailing program at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron.

Both Harrison and Ethan were important members of the BGS Sailing’s emphatic come-from-behind victory at the 2021 Victorian Schools Teams Sailing Championships. By winning the Victorian awards, both Harrison and Ethan are automatically nominated for the Australian Sailing Awards which will be announced next month.

The more recently established Girls Cricket Program at @haileyburyschool has seen an emerging star in the shape of Katherine Dekel, Yr. 10, who has been selected in the 2021/2022 Vic Metro Under 16 squad.

“Katherine is also a talented softball player and as a nine-year-old she was offered the chance to play in the Under-12s for Victoria.

“I knew she was a great cricketer, too, and when we began the Girls Cricket Program, I persuaded her to join. She has become the star of the show,” says Cameron Davidson, Head of Cricket (Girls).

“She is a role model to the younger players at Haileybury.

To be awarded this honour by Cricket Victoria is a phenomenal achievement and we are so proud of her as a cricketer and as a young person.”

Katherine remembers that her first ever unofficial cricket match took place in her backyard with her older brother as her opponent.

“That game was characterised by me demanding to bat first, refusing to bowl and poor umpiring decisions where I would bat until he would get me out which inevitably provoked an argument!” says Katherine.

She officially began playing when she was nine and was inspired by cricketers such as former @aps_sport & @careygrammar Alumni Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry.

“My ultimate aspiration is to play in the Women’s Big Bash League, in the Victorian team, and perhaps for Australia,” she says.
