Congrats Jess! 👏👏👏 Haileybury’s Jessic Congrats Jess! 👏👏👏

Haileybury’s Jessica Matin (OH2020) has earned an AFLW opportunity, signed as an injury replacement player by @stkildafcw !!

Forward Jess Matin replaces key defender Clara Fitzpatrick in the squad of 30 after the Irishwoman was unable to secure permanent residency in time for the season.

Jess, 18 years of age, who can also push into the midfield – has represented Victoria in cricket as a junior, and will join former @haileyburyschool teammate Alice Burke at the Saints.

While Jess has plenty of footy experience at local level, playing for @haileyburyschool and Beaconsfield, she has only played only 3 @nableague League matches due to her cricket commitments.

"As disappointed as we were for the door to temporarily close for Clara, we're glad another has opened for Jess," Saints head of women's football Jamie Cox said.

"We were interested in bringing her to the Saints through this year's draft, but there unfortunately wasn't a spot available on our list at the time.

"Jessica was thrilled to receive the call-up and we're just as excited to welcome her to St Kilda.

"She's a natural footballer, is skilful on both sides of the body and quite crafty around goal. We believe she'll slot into our list quite nicely."

Good luck Jess and all the best for the season ahead! 💪💪💪👍

Vale Colin McDonald, 1928-2021 We were saddened t Vale Colin McDonald, 1928-2021

We were saddened to learn of the passing of former Australian Test cricketer, @aps_sport Rep & @scotch_college_melbourne Premiership Cricketer, Colin McDonald, and extends our deepest condolences to his family for their loss.

Colin was the 24th #APS Test player & went on to play 47 Tests for Aust, making him the second most capped APS Representative. He attended Scotch College from 1942-46 & was part of Scotch’s 1945 APS Premiership team. He was also an MCC Premiership player & a member of the MCC’s Team of the Century.

Described as a courageous cricketer, Colin was regarded among the finest opening batsmen for Australia during his two decade career.

Throughout his Test career, Colin scored a total of 3,107 runs which included five centuries.

Colin also played 192 first class matches for Victoria and tallied 11,375 runs at a rate of 40.48.

Former Principal of @geelong_college & @melbournegrammarschool, & former MCC President & Life member, Paul Sheahan AM reflects:

Scottish by name, Scottish by nature.

Perhaps not the most fashionable cricketer of his day but was there ever a more doughty, stoical & courageous one? Described as a “tough-as-teak opener”, who can forget his performance in denying Jim Laker the 20th wicket in that fateful Test Match at Old Trafford in 1956 or standing like the castle keep against the might of the West Indies in 1960-61, to his own personal pain?

“CC”, as he was known in cricketing circles, was one of the MCC’s most favoured sons & he was one of their staunchest admirers.

Inevitably the end comes for everyone, but Australian cricket – and, dare I say it, Australia – has lost a veritable hero, one from whom many of the younger generation could have learned a great deal about the parry & thrust & the demands of the longer form of cricket. He had interesting ideas & he was not afraid to propound them, each one thought through carefully.

He was a man’s man, if one can use that term these days. He emerged from a different era & was puzzled by many modern developments but in no way did that diminish him as a sportsman & a friend; I, along with many others, shall miss him.

RIP Colin McDonald
